AXA improved its ranking in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for 2020 by several points and moved up to second place in the insurance sector.
AXA is pursuing a clear sustainability strategy and implementing it systematically. This is reflected, for example, in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) which ranks the world's largest companies for sustainability. For 2020, AXA achieved a score of 88 out of 100 which is a 5 point rise on last year. This means that it improved its ranking in the insurance sector by moving up from third place (2019) to second place. The current rankings cover a total of 129 insurance companies globally. AXA made particular progress under the Governance and Economy (+8 points) and Social (+3 points) criteria.
Daniel Gussmann, Chief Investment Officer of AXA Switzerland: "Our excellent ranking in the DJSI shows that our sustainability strategy is following a clear course. As one of the largest asset managers in the world, we take our responsibility in sustainability issues very seriously and are keen to take a pioneering lead."
AXA factors environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria into all of its investment decisions and invests strategically in companies that operate sustainably.
Daniel Gussmann: "Any business that isn’t sustainable just isn’t tenable for us – sustainability factors therefore play a key role in our investment process. If a company doesn’t satisfy our ESG guidelines and there are no discernible improvements, we stop investing in those companies and exclude certain sectors either in part or completely. In doing so, AXA goes much further on a range of issues than many other companies. We currently analyze and rate more than 8,000 companies, of which around 720 are blacklisted."
As well as the DJSI, AXA's leading role in sustainability issues is also reflected in other independent ratings, such as the MSCI ESG Research ranking which has given AXA a top rating of AAA with a score of 10/10 for sustainable investment.
As a member of different national and international initiatives such as the UN PRI (United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment), UN Global Compact, Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance or Swiss Sustainable Finance, AXA is committed to sustainability issues and is actively involved in the development of sustainable financial services.
