One thing is certain: The authorities ask for it as confirmation that you have liability insurance for your vehicle, otherwise they won’t give you a license plate. Reasons for a certificate of insurance

  • First registration: You’ve bought a new vehicle or imported one from abroad that hasn’t yet been driven on Swiss roads.
  • Re-registration: The license plates for your vehicle were returned to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office.
  • Interchangeable license plate: You’ve bought another vehicle in addition to your current one and would like it to be registered under the same license plate.
  • Second car with new license plate: You need a separate license plate for another vehicle so that you can use the first and second cars at the same time.
  • New place of residence: You have moved to another canton.
