It's worth insuring your laptop

Whether it's in your favorite café on the corner, on the train to see friends or at home, laptops have become a daily accompaniment and are used everywhere. This means that the devices are also exposed to the risks of day-to-day life: suddenly you accidentally spill your ice-cold cola over the whole keyboard or you end up with a broken display if you drop your laptop.

Replacing the keyboard or having the display repaired often costs several hundred francs. It's even worse if someone steals your laptop. You're just sitting on the train on the way to see friends. The long journey has made you tired, so you inadvertently nod off for a few minutes. When you open your eyes again, you notice immediately that your rucksack, including your Notebook, is gone. You have no other choice than to get a new one.

In this and other cases, it's important to have your laptop insured. Laptop insurance as a "Smartphones, tablets and consumer electronics" add-on module in your household contents insurance protects you against the high cost of repairs, buying a replacement or even theft. Anyone traveling with a laptop in Switzerland but also other parts of the world enjoys worldwide insurance protection with AXA.

If you insure your laptop, the following costs are covered:

  • Damage, including damage caused by you: as soon as you have your laptop insured, the cost of display and liquid damage is covered.
  • Loss: if you insure your laptop, it's also covered against any type of loss outside your home.
  • Theft, including abroad: if your laptop is stolen or damaged abroad, you can claim from your insurance. Theft insurance for your laptop also applies outside of Switzerland, throughout the EU and even in countries outside of Europe.

FAQ about laptop insurance

  • How can I protect my laptop against theft?

Even if you've insured your laptop, you should always keep a close eye on it wherever you go. If you're in a café, restaurant or when traveling on the train, put it somewhere where it's always visible to you, such as on a nearby chair.

When you're at home, you can lock your device with a Kensington lock. The lock is attached to the laptop itself and to your desk. The device can only be removed by entering a combination or with a key.

  • How can I insure my laptop?

The "Smartphones, tablets and consumer electronics" add-on module" from AXA offers you comprehensive insurance for your Notebook.

  • What is the sum insured?

A repair, total loss or theft of your Notebook can quickly mount up to several hundred or even thousand francs. If the claim amount exceeds the sum insured agreed in the insurance policy, you will have to pay the difference yourself. To prevent this scenario occurring, AXA insures you with a minimum sum insured of CHF 1,000. You can increase this by up to CHF 30,000. The deductible is at least CHF 50.

  • Does laptop insurance also cover damage incurred abroad?

Yes. AXA laptop insurance covers any damage incurred worldwide that you would also be covered for in Switzerland. This applies to vacations and long-term stays abroad, such as foreign study or work & travel. The only requirement is that you have to be permanently resident in Switzerland.

  • What damage is covered by laptop insurance?

If you insure your laptop, you enjoy comprehensive protection against sudden, unforeseen damage caused by other parties as well as loss or theft.

  • Who is laptop insurance intended for?

If you insure your laptop, it's not just you who should be happy about the insurance cover, as the devices of anyone living in your household can be included in the insurance too. Children are automatically insured through you at no extra cost.

The important thing is for you to give details of anyone living in your household, including yourself, on the insurance application. You don't have to give details of unborn children, as you can do this after they have been born.
