What does supplementary outpatient insurance cover?

Supplementary outpatient insurance protects patients from high medical expenses. It is voluntary and covers supplementary methods of treatment and investigation that are not covered, or only partially covered, by basic health insurance. For example, the costs of alternative medicine or contributions to gym membership or glasses.

Which supplementary outpatient insurance model is right for you?

Our supplementary outpatient insurance offers three different models: ACTIF, PLUS und COMPLET. Each model includes different benefits that take account of your personal preferences.

Good to know: About 90 percent of our customers opt for COMPLET.

FAQ on supplementary outpatient insurance

Why do I need supplementary outpatient insurance?

Supplementary outpatient insurance closes key gaps in basic health insurance cover. After all, compulsory health insurance covers only a portion of outpatient benefits.

Benefits typically included in supplementary outpatient insurance are costs of preventive examinations and complementary medicine, and of glasses, contact lenses, gym membership, and medical massages.

What’s the difference between outpatient and inpatient?

Outpatient treatment means procedures for which you do not have to stay overnight in a hospital. With inpatient treatment, you spend at least one night in a hospital. Supplementary outpatient insurance therefore covers services provided outside of the hospital environment.

The cost of inpatient treatment that is not covered by basic health insurance can be insured under supplementary hospital insurance.

Does AXA pay for treatment by my alternative practitioner?

We pay a share of the cost of various alternative healing methods, including those provided by naturopaths.

Find out more in our list of recognized therapeutic methods of complementary medicine.

Which outpatient services are covered abroad?

Our outpatient insurance policies cover a portion of a variety of costs incurred abroad.

For example, our PLUS and COMPLET products cover some of the costs of rescue and transportation as well as recovery expenses abroad. We also bear a portion of the cost of planned treatments (outpatient only) and cover the entire cost of medical emergencies (whether outpatient or inpatient).

You can find more information in the benefits overview.

What does outpatient insurance cover in the area of preventive care?

Under certain circumstances, basic health insurance covers some examinations, such as skin cancer screening and mammograms. In the area of preventive care, however, the benefits of supplementary insurance go far beyond those of statutory health insurance.

For instance, we pay a portion of the cost of medical check-ups not covered by statutory health insurance.

You can find more information in the benefits overview.

What notice periods apply when terminating AXA supplementary outpatient insurance?

All our supplementary health insurance solutions – so that includes supplementary outpatient insurance – may be terminated at the end of any calendar year, subject to three months’ prior notice. You can choose between one-, two-, and three-year contracts.
