When should you buy supplementary dental insurance for children?
We recommend buying supplementary dental insurance as early as possible. No later than before they turn five or before they lose their baby teeth is the best time to buy supplementary dental insurance for children. For several reasons: If you wait until they are receiving treatment to buy dental insurance for children, for instance, often you will be faced with benefit exclusions and waiting periods. Depending on the type of treatment, you will pay for dental costs out of your own pocket. Another reason is the dental exam:
- Up to the age of 5: It's very easy to take out supplementary dental insurance for children up until they turn five. AXA does not require a dental exam for children under the age of five.
- Over the age of 5: A medical exam is required for children over the age of five before insurance can be taken out. If the dentist finds that the child has misaligned teeth or has larger cavities, the child can be denied supplementary dental insurance. This means that you will have to pay the dental or orthodontic treatment costs.
So clearly, the earlier you buy supplementary dental insurance for your child, the better.

What costs are covered by basic insurance?
Mandatory basic insurance normally protects your child against the possible costs that arise from an accident or illness. So if your child is taken to a hospital after an accident, for example, basic insurance will usually pay for all the treatment costs. But it covers hardly any dental treatments at all – for this, your child will need supplementary dental insurance.
Basic insurance covers the costs if:
- the masticatory system is affected due to severe illness or if dental treatments are necessary due to serious underlying conditions.
- the treatment is necessary following an accident and no other accident insurance will cover it.
- the child has a congenital defect and disability insurance will not pay for the treatment costs.
FAQ on supplementary dental insurance for children
When should you buy supplementary dental insurance for children?
We recommend getting supplementary dental insurance for your child as early as possible, but at the latest before they turn five and before they get their permanent teeth. Before they turn five, you can buy supplementary dental insurance without a dental exam. After they turn five, an exam by a dentist is required for all children. If your child has misaligned teeth or a large cavity, he or she may be denied cover.
Who pays for a child’s braces?
Mandatory basic insurance only covers the costs in exceptional cases, such as following an accident or a serious illness. Generally, orthodontic treatments such as braces are not covered under basic insurance. This is where AXA supplementary dental insurance steps in: It covers a large portion of these costs, provided the treatment is not already covered under basic insurance. How much is covered depends on the rate you chose.
How much do braces for children cost?
Braces can cost anywhere between CHF 3,000 and CHF 10,000 depending on the type and complexity of treatment. The material used, the type of braces and the length of treatment all play a role as well. Without any dental insurance, parents must generally pay for this themselves since basic insurance only covers such treatments in exceptional cases.
Can a child be covered under their parents’ supplementary dental insurance?
No, every child needs their own supplementary dental insurance. AXA offers different price points with Dental 1000, Dental 2000 and Dental 3000 for personalized coverage for children and young people. These rates are based on actual need and can be taken out independently of the parents’ supplementary insurance. This means that every member of your family is optimally insured from their very first tooth up to and including braces.
