Travel cancellation insurance basic module

There are countless reasons why you would have to cancel or rebook a trip or event. Our travel cancellation insurance saves you from having to pay for it all. 

Travel insurance, also known as travel cancellation insurance, provides worldwide coverage for the cost of booked transportation (flight, train, bus and rental car), accommodation (vacation rental, hotel) and tickets and courses (e.g. festivals, events, language courses) as soon as you start your trip and during your trip.

Possible reasons for your trip being canceled or changed are 

  • You have an accident or get sick before or during the trip
  • Accident, illness or death of your traveling companion or a close relation
  • Absence of your deputy at work
  • Dissolution of your marriage, partnership or cohabitation
  • Accident, illness or death of your pet
  • Loss of your job or starting a new job
  • Damage to or theft of property at home
  • Natural events such as flooding, wind, avalanches, landslides, earthquakes or volcanic eruptions

If any one of the above reasons causes you to cancel your trip, AXA will pay the costs in full (including any contributions to climate protection and the processing fees). If the start of the trip is delayed or it ends early, AXA will pay for the services that were not used as well as the rebooking fees.

Regardless of whether your car or a rental car breaks down, you’re involved in an accident or your vehicle is stolen or damaged, we are there for you around the clock, 365 days a year.

AXA arranges and pays for all of the following:

  • Roadside assistance to restore the vehicle to roadworthy condition at the site of the breakdown
  • Towing to the nearest suitable repair shop 
  • Vehicle recovery
  • Rescue and recovery of the insured persons
  • Transportation to return directly home or continue on the trip, includes persons and pets traveling with the insured
  • Transport of the vehicle to a repair shop near your home
  • Accommodation and meals

What vehicles are insured?

Vehicles with a curb weight of up to 3,500 kg: Passenger cars, motorcycles, recreational vehicles, delivery vans and minibuses

  • Bikes, e-bikes with pedal assistance up to and including 45 km/h, electric mopeds up to and including 45 km/h, mobility scooters for the elderly with electric motors, wheelchairs and electric wheelchairs
  • All trailers that are legally permitted to be towed by the insured vehicle

Luggage add-on module

Our luggage insurance protects you from financial loss anywhere in the world if your luggage is lost, stolen, damaged or delivered late while you are traveling.

The Luggage add-on module includes

  • Damage to or theft or loss of luggage as well as the cost of replacing it
  • Delayed delivery of luggage (e.g. on a flight) and the costs involved in purchasing necessities (clothing, etc.)
  • Loss of travel documents and the cost of replacing them

Rental car deductible add-on module

Most car rental companies make you pay a deductible if there is any damage to the vehicle. This add-on module will pay the deductible for you so you can really relax and enjoy your trip.

We cover the deductible worldwide for

  • Theft of a rental car (up to the amount stated in the policy)

The insurance covers passenger cars, motorcycles, recreational vehicles, delivery vans, minibuses and trailers that are approved for the insured vehicle.

The Travel legal protection add-on module helps you with issues or disputes that involve

Medical treatment costs abroad add-on module

With Intertours, you have the best medical protection available if you have an emergency abroad. The Medical Treatment costs abroad add-on module covers the costs of outpatient and inpatient treatment worldwide – in addition to the benefits provided by your health or accident insurance. This means that if your health or accident insurance coverage is insufficient, AXA will cover the additional costs.

In a medical emergency, a trip abroad can quickly become very costly because in many places, medical care and hospital stays are considerably more expensive than in Switzerland. And outside of Switzerland, mandatory basic health insurance pays at most twice the amount that the same procedure would cost in Switzerland. The Treatment costs abroad add-on module pays for:

  • emergency, scientifically recognized and appropriate outpatient and inpatient treatment outside of Switzerland. Please note: An emergency exists if an insured requires medical treatment during a temporary stay abroad and it is unreasonable to expect them to return to Switzerland.

Please note:

  • The Medical treatment costs abroad add-on module can only be purchased together with the Personal assistance basic module. It covers rescue and recovery costs, among other things, and is recommended for every trip you take.

How much is the deductible?

There is no deductible for any of the basic modules or for the Rental car deductible, Travel legal protection or Medical treatment costs abroad add-on modules. Loss events that are covered are compensated in full.

Is my luggage insured?

Yes. Our Luggage insurance add-on module protects you from financial loss if your luggage is lost, stolen, damaged or delivered late while you are traveling.

This add-on can only be purchased together with at least one of the three basic modules.

How long before my trip begins do I need to purchase travel insurance?

The travel policy goes into effect immediately on the date when you sign the contract. You are also insured if you take out a policy on short notice. But please note that events that happened or were apparent before you took out the insurance or booked your trip are not insured.

How do I file a claim?

If you would like to report a canceled trip or an incident, you can do so quickly and easily online. Can I insure a single trip at the last minute?

Yes, single trip travel insurance from AXA (short-term policy) offers you worldwide coverage for a single trip and for up to 11 other travelers. There are seven modules that you can combine as you like to create your travel insurance policy. Then just pay for it with a credit card or PayPal and leave your worries behind when you go on vacation. The policy automatically expires once your trip ends, so you don’t have to worry about cancelling.

The vacation package was not as advertised. Does travel insurance cover this?

Yes, if you have taken out the Travel legal protection add-on module in addition to one of the three basic modules. With this add-on module, you are protected against legal issues and disputes anywhere in the world, before, during and after your vacation. Such as when the “dream hotel in an idyllic location” turns out to be a dump right on the exit of a major highway.

Does my car insurance also offer vehicle assistance abroad?

No, the Mobility (Assistance) coverage included in our car insurance only protects you in the insured vehicle. However, vehicle assistance from INTERTOURS protects you in any vehicle, even if it’s borrowed or rented. Roadside assistance applies to Switzerland, Europe and countries bordering the Mediterranean (excluding the Russian Federation, Crimea, Belarus, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Syria, Kazakhstan, Egypt, Lebanon, Libya, Israel and Cyprus).

What conditions are currently in effect regarding covid?

In most countries, there are no longer any pandemic-related restrictions. You can enter any country in Europe now without a problem. However, it’s always best to brush up on the latest rules before you start your journey. A good place to ask is the Federal Office of Public Health.

Does the travel insurance also cover the next pandemic?

If another pandemic should happen, your travel insurance will continue to cover you. If an official agency declares that you cannot go on or continue your trip, then the following benefits apply: 

We insure (up to CHF 80,000 per event) 

  • Travel cancellation due to illness
  • Travel interruption or return home due to illness

Booking made before outbreak of a pandemic

  • Per policy, a maximum of 3 cancellations before a trip or vacation is insured.
  • AXA’s insurance benefits are limited to a maximum sum insured of CHF 10,000 per insured event and insured person.

Booking made after outbreak of a pandemic

  • Per policy, only one trip or vacation can be canceled due to unforeseeable circumstances.
  • AXA’s insurance benefits are limited to a maximum of CHF 10,000 per insured person.

In the following cases, the travel cancellation insurance does not cover any of the costs since, in principle, the trip can be taken:

  • 3G, 2G, 2G+, 1G, etc. restrictions in destination country
  • Fear or uncertainty before starting a trip
