Would you like to know which insurance policies are required by law, which we strongly recommend and which may be useful depending on the situation? We help you make the right decision.
Mandatory insurance
In Switzerland, there are various types of insurance that are required by law. For example:
- Liability insurance for motor vehicles: Every car owner must take out liability insurance. It covers the costs of damage caused by your car.
- Health insurance: Everyone living in Switzerland must have health insurance (basic insurance). It covers the costs of medical treatments and medication. There are various models you can choose from. It’s worth comparing the offers of different health insurers in order to find the right one for you.
- Building insurance: If you own a property, you should take out building insurance. This protects you against the financial consequences of damage caused by fire, natural events (such as flooding), water (e.g. from pipes), glass breakage, or as a result of burglary, and in some cantons insurance against fire and natural events is mandatory.
Highly recommended:
Some insurance policies are not mandatory but are highly recommended as they protect important areas of life. For example:
- Liability insurance: Third-party liability insurance covers the costs of damage that you cause to other people or their property – for example, damage you are responsible for as a tenant or mishaps caused by your child.
- Household contents insurance: Household contents insurance protects your possessions at home against theft and water or fire damage.
Recommended depending on the situation:
Depending on your situation and stage of life, additional insurance may be worthwhile to minimize unexpected costs in the event of a claim.
- Comprehensive insurance: With comprehensive insurance, you insure damage to your motor vehicle. You can choose between partial accidental damage (damage caused by bad weather, animals and unknown persons) and comprehensive accidental damage (partial accidental damage plus any damage you cause yourself).
- Legal protection insurance: Helps when it comes to answering legal questions and resolving disputes, and it protects you against financial risks.
- Supplementary health insurance: This supplement to mandatory basic insurance contributes to costs such as those for glasses, contact lenses, gym memberships, and complementary medicine.
- Pillar 3a: With Pillar 3a, you save both for the future and on taxes today.
