What is luggage insurance?

As special coverage for your luggage when you travel, luggage insurance protects you against theft, loss or damage. If your luggage is lost, delayed or stolen while traveling, it will cost you time and money.

Travel insurance protects you against these types of situations and ensures that you can enjoy the rest of your trip without worry. Luggage insurance reimburses you for your financial loss up to the agreed sum insured and it generally also pays to have your luggage replaced.

Why does luggage insurance make sense?

Regardless of whether you’re getting away for a weekend trip or going on a longer vacation, something can quickly go wrong with your luggage when you travel.

Without the right insurance coverage, you’ll have to pay for new clothes, toiletries or important personal belongings yourself. With travel and luggage insurance, you’re covered financially and can avoid having to pay extra out of your own pocket. And this coverage is especially useful if you travel with valuable personal items.

What items are insured under luggage insurance?

Luggage insurance includes some of your household contents which you bring with you on your trip , i.e. your personal luggage. The deciding factor is whether these items belong to you and you have them for your personal use.

Luggage insurance primarily covers belongings that you are carrying with you in your luggage, backpack or travel bag. With luggage insurance from AXA, you can also insure your travel documents. If you lose them, AXA will cover the cost of replacing your passports and IDs.

Luggage insurance covers:

  • Clothes and shoes in your luggage
  • Toiletries and personal care products
  • Travel accessories such as sunglasses, umbrellas or travel bags
  • Books, consumer electronics and personal items
  • Gifts and souvenirs that you take on your trip
  • Personal documents such as IDs and passports
  • Emergency purchases made due to delayed luggage, such as replacement clothing and toiletries

Luggage insurance does not cover:

  • Monetary assets such as cash or credit and store cards
  • Bicycles, vehicles and boats, with their accessories in each case
  • Merchandise, professional equipment and tools
  • Items entrusted to you by a third party (unless you have rented or leased them)

What losses are not covered under luggage insurance?

Damage that you do yourself while using your luggage is not covered by luggage insurance. Nor does it cover normal wear and tear or regular mishaps that occur during travel. If you forget your jacket on the plane, for example, or dent your carry-on by accidentally hitting a post after completing luggage screening – these are not insured losses.

How do I take out luggage insurance?

AXA luggage insurance cannot be purchased on its own. You add supplementary coverage for your luggage to either yourtravel insurance or household contents insurance .

Luggage insurance as add-on for travel insurance

AXA travel insurance is based on modules. This means that you build your coverage by combining the various modules and expand it by including the Luggage add-on module. This add-on protects you anywhere in the world from financial loss involving your luggage. The module cannot be taken out alone. You must purchase it with at least one basic module such as Travel cancellation insurance or Personal assistance.

4 steps to buying luggage insurance

  1. First decide whether you would like to add on to your  travel insurance or your existing household contents policy.
  2. Then choose the Luggage add-on module that fits your needs.
  3. Select your sum insured .
  4. You can purchase the policy quickly and easily online or with a personal consultation, and in most cases it can be done right before your trip.

What do I do if my luggage is lost or stolen?

If your luggage is lost or stolen while you’re traveling, you need to act fast. In order for AXA to be able to quickly review your claim and reimburse you for the resulting costs, you should do the following:

  1. Report a loss:
Report the loss of your luggage to the airport, train station or tour operator right away. Request a written confirmation, such as a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) if you fly. This report is the most important proof for the insurance.
  2. Submit the reference number:
You will receive either a reference number or a file number on site. Make sure to give this number to AXA so that the claim can be allocated correctly, which makes clarification easier and shortens processing times.
  3. Keep any receipts for replacement purchases:
If your luggage is delayed or missing, only buy essential items such as clothing or toiletries. Keep all the original receipts as these will serve as proof for reimbursement. Please note that the insurance only reimburses purchases that are appropriate and necessary.
  4. Submit a list of the contents of your luggage:
Create as precise a list as possible of everything that was in your luggage. Include the brands, approximate age and purchase price (if known). This overview will help the insurance to correctly calculate the financial loss.
  5. Document the damage:
If your luggage or its contents arrive(s) damaged, photograph the damage right away. And include a confirmation from the transportation company. Clear pictures and documents speed up claim processing.
  6. Inform AXA about the damage:
Report the claim to AXA directly online or through your advisor. Include all documentation, i.e. the report from the transport company, receipts and your list. Only when AXA has the complete claims report can it start to review the claim.
  7. Notify the police in the event of theft:
If your luggage is stolen, you must report it to the local police immediately. Have the police give you a copy of the report so you can send it to AXA. Without an official police report, the theft will not be considered sufficiently demonstrated.
