Third-party driver insurance: what is it and what does it cover?
This add-on protects you if you sometimes drive cars that are not registered in your name. If you’re involved in an accident, the keeper is often faced with high costs, even if the car is properly insured. This is where third-party driver insurance applies: it covers the financial consequences and ensures that the vehicle keeper is not liable for the costs.
Third-party driver insurance covers the following:
- Accidental damage: damage to the vehicle itself, such as through collision, is covered by third-party driver insurance (unless the rental car is fully covered against accidental damage).
- Deductible: many accidental damage insurers require a deductible in the event of a claim. Third-party driver insurance covers these costs.
- Loss of bonus: if your accident causes the keeper to be downgraded in the bonus malus system, third-party driver insurance covers the additional costs.
Who needs third-party driver insurance for cars?
Third-party driver insurance is worth taking out if you sometimes drive third-party cars that belong to people outside of your household. This add-on protects you as the driver but also relieves the keeper, as AXA covers accidental damage, loss of bonus and deductible.
Third-party driver insurance only makes sense if you sometimes drive a third-party vehicle. It does not apply if you permanently use the car, for example.
- Friends and acquaintances: if you occasionally borrow a car from within your circle of friends, you can drive worry-free with third-party driver insurance.
- Family members outside the household: if you use the car of your siblings or parents who do not live with you, you are protected by third-party driver insurance.
- Occasional situations: vacations, moving house or weekend trips are classic examples from daily life where there is the risk of an accident with a third-party car.
- Young drivers: those who don’t own their own car yet often use those of friends or relatives (outside of their household) and benefit in particular from third-party driver insurance.
Am I insured if I drive a third-party car?
You are normally co-insured if you drive a third-party car. This is because every motor vehicle in Switzerland has compulsory motor vehicle liability insurance covering damage to third-parties. However, if the vehicle involved is damaged in an accident, the vehicle keeper bears the financial consequences: loss of bonus, higher premiums or possible deductibles in accidental damage insurance. Third-party driver insurance applies to cars for this specific situation. It covers these costs for you if you drive someone else’s car.
Frequently asked questions
Does third-party driver insurance also apply abroad?
Third-party driver insurance also covers you if you drive outside of Switzerland with a third-party car. The cover applies to all motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes , regardless of whether the vehicle is a passenger car, delivery or RV.
Are rental vehicles also insured by third-party driver insurance?
Rental cars and car-sharing vehicles are not included in third-party driver insurance. AXA offers a separate solution for these instances: car-sharing and rental car insurance. Anyone who regularly uses hire cars or car-sharing offers should consider this add-on.
Are RVs also covered by third-party driver insurance?
Yes. Third-party driver insurance applies to all motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, which therefore includes RVs too. So if you borrow your friend’s RV and it gets damaged, your third-party driver insurance will cover loss of bonus and any accidental damage deductibles.
Does third-party driver insurance also apply if the third-party vehicle is fully insured?
Yes. In this instance, third-party driver insurance covers the loss of bonus and any possible deductibles from accidental damage.
