Every fifth fire in the Christmas period is caused by an unattended candle. A virtual reality video from AXA highlights the danger.
In December, there are around one third more fires in rooms or apartments compared to an average month, as shown by figures from AXA for the last few years. This is particularly the case in the days over Christmas itself, with AXA receiving three times more fire damage claims than on normal days.
Fire damage is one of the most expensive claims there is. The average claims amount for a fire caused by candles is CHF 10,000. The damage is much worse if a room or even a house burns down - in the worst-case scenario, even people are injured.
A 360-degree video from AXA uses virtual reality to clearly show how quickly flames from the Christmas tree can engulf an entire room.

Stefan Müller, Head of Property Claims & sales force at AXA, explains: “Any candle, whether on a tree or the Advent wreath, should never be left unattended. Extinguish all candles before leaving a room.” When the flame of a candle burns down, it should be out of reach of any flammable material, he explains. He advises further: “A bucket of water if the worst happens not only makes sense near the Christmas tree but also the Advent wreath.”
