Parking damage insurance: a sensible addition to your car insurance

After returning from shopping, you can see it a mile off: a dent in the driver’s door of your parked car. But no sign at all of the culprit. And no note left on your car, let alone any witnesses in sight. It’s a classic case of parking damage: damage caused to your parked car by an unknown vehicle or culprit. Whether it’s scratched paintwork, a dented panel, or some other damage, without parking damage insurance you would be left to pay for the repairs yourself.

Who pays for parking damage to your car?

Ideally, the person who caused the damage will wait for you to return to your car. But, unfortunately, that is all too seldom the case. You usually won’t know who’s responsible – and who ought to pay – for the damage to your parked car. This is where AXA’s parking damage insurance steps in. On request, you can include it in your comprehensive accidental damage insurance cover.

How much of the damage does the insurance cover?

AXA lets you determine the scope of cover yourself. You can choose between Parking Damage insurance and Parking Damage Plus.

  • Parking Damage: We cover your parking damage up to a maximum amount of CHF 1,000 per insurance year (Jan. 1 through Dec. 31); the date of the damage is decisive for cover.
  • Parking Damage Plus: We cover, without restrictions, all parking damage occurring within the insurance year. There is no cost limit per claim.

Which vehicles can I insure against parking damage?

You can insure your new or used car against parking damage. When you take out the insurance, your car must not be more than four years old.

What doesn’t parking damage insurance cover and why doesn’t that matter?

  • Damage you cause yourself: Damage you cause to your own car while parking is not considered parking damage. Swiping a pillar in a parking garage, for instance, is classified as collision damage. But you still don’t need to worry because collision damage is covered by your comprehensive accidental damage insurance, which you already have if you have taken out parking damage insurance.
  • Malicious damage: If an unknown person deliberately damages your parked car, it is generally a case for your partial accidental damage insurance. That includes acts of vandalism such as when windows are smashed, exterior mirrors torn off or paintwork daubed. With parking damage insurance, you automatically have partial accidental damage cover and are thus insured against damage of this kind.
