Responsibility for future energy

For AXA, as an insurance company, taking on responsibility is a core task. For the period 2016 to 2020 the focus of our corporate responsibility lies on the topic of «Future Energy.» Supporting its customers and the public in their approach to energy and making them aware of the relevance of the topic are major concerns at AXA.

Commitments in the field of energy

Energy usage impacts our core business. Because the use of fossil fuels and the resulting climate change are expected to lead to more frequent and more extreme weather events causing greater damage, including in Switzerland. As an insurer and long-term investor it is our responsibility to help limit the advance of climate change and to support the energy transition. Hence AXA is placing the focus of its corporate responsibility on the topic of «Future Energy.» This is clear from the following selection of AXA initiatives:

  • Since 2008, AXA has followed an environmental strategy focusing on climate protection and measures to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
  • AXA is the first insurance company to withdraw its investments in companies that generate more than 30 percent of their revenue with coal.
  • Since 2009, AXA has drawn its electricity from 100% renewable energy: 97% hydropower, 3% wind power and its own photovoltaic systems on the AXA office buildings in Winterthur und Lausanne.
  • AXA succeeded in reducing its energy consumption per employee by a third between 2008 and 2016. By 2020, its goal is to achieve a reduction of 40% versus 2008.
  • Since 2010, AXA has been running a successful energy efficiency program for its office buildings.
  • AXA employees’ everyday business travel is environmentally friendly. AXA offers video-conferencing using the latest video technology, car-sharing with Mobility, AXA e-bikes and e-charging stations. Emissions produced by business trips are compensated.
  • Through its collaboration with, AXA gives customers simple access through an app to some 10,000 charging stations for electric cars in Switzerland and across the whole of Europe.
  • Customers of AXA and benefit from a free breakdown and towing service for electric vehicles – even for flat batteries.
  • E-charging stations for tenants. Since 2017, in all new builds owned by AXA, a number of parking spaces are equipped with charging stations.
  • AXA is the leading insurer of hydropower plants and wind turbines. It insures more than 200 hydropower plants and some 20 wind turbines.
  • AXA insures investments in renewable energies: photovoltaic systems, geothermal heat probes, heat pumps.
  • By 2020, the AXA Group intends to triple its Impact Investments to 3 billion euros.
  • AXA contributes some CHF 78 million to the Impact Fund and the AXA Clean Energy Fund of the AXA Group. These funds invest in areas such as microfinance, health, education and climate protection.
  • As a partner of the Swiss Climate Foundation, AXA supports energy efficiency and climate protection projects of Swiss SMEs.
  • Since 2007, as a real estate investor, AXA has pursued a policy of sustainable construction (e.g. Freilager Zurich). CO2 emissions of the real estate portfolio will be reduced by about 20% by 2020.
